About the San Diego Area Writing Project

The San Diego Area Writing Project is dedicated to the improvement of student learning through the effective teaching of writing.

As one of the 16 sites of the California Writing Project network, and one of the 185 sites of the National Writing Project network, SDAWP has an exemplary reputation of professional development work over its thirty-seven year history.

SDAWP resides within the Center for Research in Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence (CREATE) at the University of California, San Diego. The site is guided by the following NWP / CWP principles:

  • Teachers are key to educational reform.
  • The best teacher of teachers is often another teacher who has demonstrated success in a similar situation.
  • Knowledge about the teaching of writing comes from those who teach, write and research.
  • Writing deserves constant attention, from kindergarten through university.
  • Universities and schools accomplish more in partnership.

The SDAWP is also one of the California Subject Matter Projects, a professional development community for teachers.
